Edinburgh is a hugely cosmopolitan, modern city well used to welcoming visitors from countless countries and cultures around the world. As such vegetarian food is no longer an afterthought amongst the hundreds of eateries in the city. A vegetarian in Edinburgh can look forward to excellent quality and a wide choice of places to eat.

Like in any city, restaurants in Edinburgh can come and go, but there are many stalwarts of vegetarian food that have been around for many years. Here are some of the highlights and best vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh.

Henderson’s of Edinburgh

This is the Daddy of vegetarian eating in Edinburgh and has been around for over 50 years. The site is on varying levels with a shop and deli above, restaurant in the basement and great food throughout. It can be found on Hanover street right in the centre of Edinburgh

David Bann Vegetarian Restaurant

David Bann’s is situated in the Old Town between the Royal Mile and the Cowgate. The restaurant has a real contemporary look and feel despite being situated in this ancient part of the city. Reviews rate everything about this restaurant very highly.

Kalpna is an Indian vegetarian restaurant that has been serving Edinburgh for over a quarter century. It holds an established position not far from the Meadows to the south of the city centre. There is a very wide choice of excellent Indian cuisine and reviews are always excellent.

Himalaya Centre

The Cafe at the Himalaya Centre on South Clark Street always has a wonderful array of vegetarian Tibetian and Indian dishes to tempt the palate. There is a shop and meditation centre here too.

The Forest Cafe

Found in the West End on Laurieston Place, the Forest Cafe is run by volunteers and serves up a great mix of vegetarian food at really cheap prices.

While this selection is focused on exclusively vegetarian restaurants, almost all restaurants in Edinburgh offer good vegetarian options as a central part of their menus so finding a place to enjoy great vegetarian food should be no problem at all.
