With Valentine’s Day coming up what better place to take a loved one than to Edinburgh – once described by Sir Walter Scott as ‘mine own romantic town’.
Here are our top suggestions for things to do and places to visit on a short city break.
To show that extra special someone that you really do care then how about splashing out on a decadent dinner in the Forth Floor Restaurant of Harvey Nichols? With set menus in either the Restaurant or the Brasserie and both with spectacular views over the city – we’re sure that it will be an evening to remember. The Duck Ballotine sounds good to us…now where’s that credit card?!
For a bit of culture then Edinburgh’s many prominent museums and galleries are well worth a visit. During February the stand out exhibitions would have to be Vikings! at the National Museum of Scotland or the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art’s Scottish Colourist Series: SJ Peploe exhibition.
Or for something a little different then the newly revamped National Portrait Gallery are running a free evening tour on Valentine’s Day of the gallery’s tragic love stories – led by historian Lucinda Hawksley.
On the other side of town you could wander across the meadows and then warm up with a reviving hot chocolate and freshly made pastries at the Swedish artisan bakery, Peter’s Yard. And if you and your partner love a dram and want to stave off the chill of winter, you can’t beat a guided whisky tasting at the Scotch Whisky Experience.
Lastly if you want to make that special someone THE special someone then find the perfect sparkler at many of Edinburgh’s top jewellery stores including Royal warrant holder Hamilton and Inches and newly opened luxury jeweller ROX – both found on George Street.
