Around and about
Situated on a quiet residential street along the boundary between the New Town and Stockbridge, guests can admire the Georgian architecture of the New Town before crossing into the quaint village setting of Stockbridge, with its Sunday farmers’ market and bustling atmosphere.

Wander past the distinctive tower of St Stephen’s Theatre and the quaint mews cottages of Circus Lane to reach Stockbridge’s abundance of cafes, pubs, restaurants, and independent shops. We’d recommend picking up a loaf of sourdough from IJ Mellis on Bakers Place for breakfast, and whatever cheese the cheesemongers recommend for a savoury snack! If you have more of a sweet tooth, The Pastry Section on Raeburn Place does excellent cakes, and the Howdah Tea and Coffee Company on Deanhaugh Street is great for hot drinks or freshly ground coffee to take away.
In our opinion, Stockbridge is home to some of Edinburgh’s best bookshops. Golden Hare Books on St Stephen Street always has a fire going on winter days, and Ginger and Pickles just across the street has a carefully curated selection of books for children. Meanwhile, on Raeburn Place, Rare Birds Book Shop is Scotland’s only bookshop fully dedicated to women’s writing–and if you’re after secondhand classics, the selection at Oxfam Books or Shelter Scotland can’t be beat.
There are also ample green spaces near Cumberland Street. On a nice day, take a stroll along the Water of Leith and enjoy the sounds of the birds and the rushing river. If you walk west, the leafy walkway will take you through idyllic Dean Village towards the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. If you go east, you will eventually reach the Shore and the waterfront of the lively neighbourhood of Leith, where the Royal Yacht Britannia is housed.
Alternatively, simply meander over to nearby Inverleith Park, where there’s a highly underrated view of the Edinburgh skyline over the pond. Continue through the park and you will reach the extensive grounds and lovely glasshouses of the Royal Botanic Gardens! Why not bring a book and a picnic?
Of course, there’s plenty more that Edinburgh has to offer. Head uphill from Stockbridge and you will reach the main shopping thoroughfares of Princes Street, George Street, and the St James Quarter, as well as the plentiful bars and restaurants in the area. Less than fifteen minutes of walking will take you to the iconic buildings on The Mound, with the iconic attractions of Edinburgh’s Old Town just beyond. You can also reach the 6 best restaurants for Scottish dining in Edinburgh within short walking distance.
